  9.                            When it first appeared amid a shroud of
  10.        great secrecy in 1954,the f-104 starfighter was considered as
  11.        the most technologically-advanced fighter to slide trough the air.
  12.        It had wings so thin and sharp they could cut unwary ground crew
  13.        and so small many questioned it's ability to fly at all.
  14.                            The Starfighter was designed specifically to
  15.        combat the Russian Mig-15 and similar enemy fighters.The desire 
  16.        was for more power and altitude,but the characteristics that gave
  17.        these were lacking in other areas,such as maneuverability.In fact,
  18.        the F-104 were not totally succesful and were phased out of the
  19.        USAF after a relatively short service life.
  20.                            On the other hand,a refined version of the
  21.        sliver-like fighter was produced in great numbers for foreign
  22.        customers and the sleek plane finally found its niche in in the
  23.        world's air-forces.
  24.                            The main reason for the eventual success of
  25.        the F-104 was due to a rethinking of the tactical role for wich
  26.        the plane was designed.Carrying a loat of long-ranging missiles,
  27.        and firing them from a distance,does not require a thight turn
  28.        radius.The Starfighter has a great acceleration µrate and a 
  29.        maximum speed of 1,450 mph,or more than twice the speed of sound.
